Kwong Tong Cemetery in Kuala Lumpur

About Kwong Tong Cemetery

Kwong Tong Cemetery (KTC), also known as Guang Yi Cemetery / Guang Yi Tower, is the oldest and largest Chinese cemetery in Kuala Lumpur, covering more than 333 acres of land rich in cultural and historical heritage. Founded in 1895 and located in Bukit Seputeh, this heritage site serves as the final resting place of many early pioneers of Kuala Lumpur, including the renowned Kapitan Yap Ah Loy. In addition to its main cemetery, Kwong Tong Cemetery also operates a second burial site in Sungai Besi, providing additional space and facilities to continue serving the community’s burial and memorial needs.

For generations, Kwong Tong Cemetery has played an important role in preserving traditional Chinese funeral customs, ancestral worship practices, and Buddhist funeral service or Taoist rites. The cemetery is also home to Guang Yi Tower, a modern columbarium that provides urn placement for cremated remains in a peaceful and well‑maintained environment. As one of the oldest Chinese cemeteries in Kuala Lumpur, Kwong Tong Cemetery is well known for its cultural and historical significance and is suitable for Buddhist, Taoist, and traditional Chinese funeral practices.

Kwong Yee Pagoda (Kwong Tong Columbarium)

The Kwong Yee Pagoda is KTC’s signature columbarium. It is a multi-storey sanctuary for the storage of funeral urns and ancestral tablets.

KTC is home to two separate memorial pagodas, Kwong Yee Pagoda and new Kwong Yee Pagoda, each serving different generations of families and offering different niche layouts and pricing structures.

Designed with traditional Chinese architectural aesthetics, the Pagoda offers a tranquil environment where families can perform their filial duties. It is more than just a storage space; it is a place of remembrance where the spirits of ancestors are honored through regular prayers, incense, and the collective energy of the community.

The Classic Kwong Yee Pagoda (Old Tower)

The Old Kwong Yee Pagoda, commonly referred to as Guang Yi Tower, is the original memorial tower within Kwong Tong Cemetery. It is beloved for its traditional charm and historical significance.

  • Atmosphere: It has a more “classic” feel, often preferred by families who already have ancestors resting there and wish to keep the family together.

  • Value: Generally, the classic tower offers more budget-friendly options for families seeking a dignified yet economical resting place.

  • Layout: It features a circular or octagonal traditional layout, which some “Feng Shui” practitioners prefer for its specific energy flow.

New Kwong Yee Pagoda

The New Kwong Yee Pagoda is a more recently developed memorial tower within Kwong Tong Cemetery. It was designed to accommodate modern needs while maintaining respect for traditional Chinese memorial customs.

  • Enhanced Accessibility: Equipped with modern elevators, making it much easier for elderly family members to visit niches on higher floors without climbing stairs.

  • Modern Amenities: Features brighter lighting, better ventilation (air-conditioning in certain areas), and a more spacious design to accommodate large crowds during Cheng Beng (Tomb Sweeping Day).

  • Premium Options: This tower introduces Family Allotments (Semi-Detached or Independent units) that can house 10 to 16 urns, allowing generations of a family to stay together in a single, private suite.

  • Advanced Features: Better security, digitalized records for easier locating of niches, and sleek, high-quality finishes on the niche doors.

Kwong Tong Traditional Chinese Cemetery (Burial Plot)

While modern cremation is popular, Kwong Tong Cemetery remains the premier location for traditional ground burials in Kuala Lumpur. Spanning two main sites in Bukit Seputeh (Kerayong) and Sungai Besi, it offers a final resting place that is rich in history and auspicious “Feng Shui.”

Burial Locations

  • Bukit Seputeh (Kerayong Area): The historic heart of the cemetery. It is highly sought after for its established landscape and proximity to the city center.

  • Sungai Besi Cemetery: A secondary site located near Bandar Tun Razak. It offers a more modern, organized layout while maintaining the same high standards of maintenance.

Types of Burial Plots

  • Single Allotment: For the burial of one deceased person.

  • Twin (Double) Allotment: Often purchased as a “Longevity Plot” (寿位 – Shou Xie) for couples, ensuring they remain together in the afterlife.

  • Exhumation & Re-burial: We specialize in professional exhumation services for families wishing to relocate ancestors from older, distant graveyards into the well-managed grounds of Kwong Tong.
